We are Indians. Do not ask us to follow the rule of law. As per the Income Tax Rules, in India, Permanent Account Number ( PAN Card Number) has to be furnished while depositing cash exceeding Rs.50000/- for credit of account. So the Banks are supposed to keep a copy of the PAN Card, after the copy of the PAN Card is verified with the original and held with the records.

Recently in a Bank in Gorakhpur, the Bank requested one of its customers to furnish the original of PAN card, not only the customer did not produce the card but has complained against the branch to its Corporate Office.

The Corporate Office has taken the stand that the branch is in order in requesting the PAN card in original for verification of PAN card number for updation of its record for one time basis. But the customer is insistent on asking as to why he is requested for the PAN card and the reasons behind this insistence:

  1. He is 68 years of age.
  2. He is a commerce graduate of 1960.and Law graduate of 1962
  3. He is a CHAIRMAN of an Pvt. Ltd. Company

The above instance is not a figment of imagination of some fertile mind. Unfortunately it is a true instance.

The main reason behind this is the thought that I am above law. How dare some body ask me to follow the rule meant for hoi polloi?

Is not this the same kind of mentality which feels that the rules are meant for every body else but for me? This thinking gets evident in our every day life

  1. When we do not follow traffic rules.
  2. When we throw our trash from roof tops.
  3. When we spit without a thought in corners or on streets.
  4. When we smoke in public.
  5. When we encroach on public space

Is there any remedy from this?
Does any body care?
Do you care?
Do I care?
